This time of year, the earth begins to preserve her energy, and the light wanes. Days are shorter, and I feel the draw to go within. To curl up with a book. To sit by a fire. To have a cup of coffee with a friend.
With less light, we spend less time outdoors, which can lead to the condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder. I wonder if someone took the word ‘sad’ and came up with that affliction? Don’t get me wrong, I’ve experienced it. Staying indoors when it is cold keeps us from light. We lived in Minnesota for eighteen years, and cabin fever is real.
Light is a frequency, and exposing ourselves to light increases our inner light. More of life is available to us when we live at a higher frequency. Life feels better when we are light-hearted, focus on sharing our unique light, and see the light in others.
Here are ten of my favorite quotes on light and its power.
1. We are all broken, that's how the light gets in. – Ernest Hemingway
2. You can’t be the light and hold another in darkness. - Paul Selig
3. Nothing can dim the light that shines from within. - Maya Angelou
4. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. - Martin Luther King, Jr.
5. There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it. - Edith Wharton
6. As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being. - Carl Jung
7. Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness. - Desmond Tutu
8. Education is the movement from darkness to light. - Allan Bloom
9. A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle. - Many people said this, but I heard it first from Cindy Daniels.
10. Your smile is the brightest form of light you can share with another. - Kathy Garland
May you brighten your own life and that of others today.
May you be happy.
May you be peaceful.
May you be ever loved.
May you always be loving.
Thanks to Paul Macko for the idea to use lists as content. Check out his newsletters here on Substack. I’m on a mission to finish a round of revisions on my novel by the end of the year. You’ll see shorter posts from me, but I will continue to publish. As always, share what’s on your mind and what topics and thoughts you’d like me to share.
